About Karen Messick

Photography has always been a part of my life. As a child, my dad was constantly taking photos of the family and nature, with me often in front of the camera. My interest in creating images only developed later, as I began to travel. I was an art student at the Maryland Institute College of Art, exploring various media. My journey into photography began in earnest in 1997 when I took my first photography workshop with John and Barbara Gerlach.

After struggling with the technical aspects, I acquired a Nikon N90S and transitioned to digital photography in 2006, ready to embrace new creative possibilities.

My Artistic Vision

Behind the viewfinder, I seek to capture the beauty around me, whether it’s landscapes or candid moments. Every click of the shutter disappears the outside world, allowing me to focus on creating stunning imagery. My work reflects the places I’ve traveled and the inspirations I’ve encountered.

My articles and photographs have been featured in publications such as Nature Photographer Magazine and iPhoneLife Magazine. I've displayed my work in galleries like the Rehoboth Art League and The Seaford Historical Museum, and currently, you can find my images at More Than Fine Framing in Ruxton, MD.

A Journey of Learning and Sharing

I have spent years teaching and guiding others in photography. I previously instructed at Johns Hopkins University and have led workshops for the Capital Photography Center. I've spoken at events such as the Mid-Atlantic Photography Expo and PhotoWeek in Washington, D.C.

Since moving to Oahu, Hawaii, in February of 2018, I have been reestablishing myself and my art in this beautiful new environment.
